The brothers Mael turned in the best performance at Fuji Rock, hands down, closely followed by the reunited Japanese psychedelic freakout "Flower Travellin' Band", who were playing together for the first time in 35 years. But, yeah, wow, Sparks, man, what a show. I was lucky enough to catch them last time they played in Tokyo during the HYL tour, and they blew my mind then, but I think they may have been even better on Saturday night. Consummate performers. And getting to hear "Goofing Off" in the same set as "Dick Around"!? Pure heaven. |

Not unlike a few weeks ago in London! Any chance of a full review or, at least, the setlist?
Who was in the band...? |

Thanks for that - I was wondering how it went. Can you tell us more about the songlist?
I really wanted to go to that gig! |

I don't know why, but I'm surprised to see that they did the burning of the album covers at this gig too. I associated it with the 21 at Islington.............finishing the shows one by one. Is it more like time has passed and we aren't the same SPARKS anymore? What meanings did everyone else get from this symbolic gesture? Oh, I know another one...........with each album Sparks was getting hotter and hotter!
Has this topic been discussed before? If so my apologies. |

i think it was a closure of ther past of some sort,it was the most moving thing ive witnessed as a Sparks fan,the music was haunting in the background,i think the thing that made it emotional was the crowd cheering like mad each time for there own favourite, glad whomp that sucker got a big cheer as well as gs&sv.

I was somehow surprised too.
Now maybe the Japanese audience wasn't so moved as the people from Islington, but for Sparks guess it serves as some kind of an opinion poll about their albums, a popularity contest, so they maybe will do this again at other concerts, in the US for instance.
But maybe they need to burn again the albums to mark more strongly this moment of their career.
Russell said that performing all the albums in a row was the best way to promote ECOTD, while Ron said that the second best idea was "killing ourselves". So they do kill themselves in style, with a whole ritual (Judgement Day was everyday and witches burning everywhere...), having in the background that trancy melody and all the faces hidden behind the huge monkey smiles (Noone ever wears a frown when they see me coming round...)
And Sparks are burning, because all sparks have to burn, it's only natural (and literal). But now with some exorcistic effect - what about melting all their images from the past into a single one and show that there's no such thing as glam versus disco versus techno and so on, but only these ageless people and their ageless music? Memories from the past? Well, melt the past! _________________ Entertainment or art - one should know from the start |

Wonder if they did the burning of the albums at the Finland gig and Lithuania? Anyone got the answer? I could check another thread, but just don't have the motivation at the moment.
Boy, the banana sure is energetic! Maybe it'll rub off on me! |

Hi all,
At first I have to let you know that it's not me that has taken those photos on Flickr. It was an amateur photographer called "ickyflikr". I think his comments on the photos are nice
I was moved when I saw album burning ceremony because I am an old fan since 1975, though I don't know if younger audience was moved like me.
One more...
Some of Japanese fans in the front row had already mastered the dance of "I can't believe...", and they did it facing directly with Ron & Russell. Ron seemed to be very delightful looking at them.

Hi Pineapple95,
"Tap Dance" is Ron's performance.
Ron got a storm of cheers. The audience didn't care about the fact that the movement of Ron's shoes didn't syncronize completely to the tap sounds
