Yes, I'm also surprised.

Is it OK to say I've never heard of John Woo ?

Yes, it's fine. There is a big discussion about this on the app formerly known as Twitter, so I looked up John Woo and ascertained that I have never seen a movie by him. And while other Sparks fans seem to be over the moon about this, I'm not keen on their making a very violent movie.

I'm familiar with his name but have never seen any of his movies. Maybe this is a Tsui Hark connection? He co-produced John Woo's A Better Tomorrow. To be honest, I'm not very excited about this. Not that I'm against John Woo directing it but it sounds like an odd choice. I thought they are making a musical?

I imagined most people would’ve heard of John Woo from FACE/OFF…
I don’t think Ron and Russell would have agreed to his involvement if they didn’t think he could do the project justice.

I've only seen "Hard Boiled", and boy how I hated that movie!
I can only hope for something (very) different, and find some comfort in the fact that, at least, the future OST will be worth listening to.

There were a couple of murders in Annette too, I'm hoping for something a bit lighter this time.

Everything in Annette was so stylized that the murders didn't come across as horrifying. When I read the plot summary of Hard Boiled, it seemed pretty gruesome.

I know what you mean but actually in Annette, for me anyway l thought the murder of the conductor was quite unsettling..... not overtly vicious but very disturbing....
From what l remember, Ron and Russell have said that Xcucior is a million miles away from Annette..... I'm intrigued.

Confirmation: https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/john-woo-half-musical-sparks-exclusive/

I'm not a big action movie guy and the only John Woo movie I've seen is Face/Off, which was pretty fun. I'm curious what "half-musical" means. I'm cautiously optimistic, but the fact that the Maels wrote the script worries me a bit. Songwriting and screenwriting are...not the same. Also I wonder what kind of budget this will have. Hoping for big-production Sparks songs with full orchestration and great singing.

Mee too, with more singing Russell. That's what I missed the most in Annette.
