On June 25th Sparks will be performing, for the first time, their acclaimed musical The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman.
In 1956 Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles Of A Summer Night won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Poetic Humor. In this unique musical from the acclaimed Los Angeles band Sparks, a conflicted Ingmar Bergman, having recently returned home from the French Riviera, is inexplicably transported from his native Sweden to Los Angeles during the heyday of the ‘50s Hollywood studio system. Originally commissioned for Swedish National Radio in 2009 and subsequently released as a box set, The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman was hailed as “a bold, major work. . .compelling and fascinating” by The Guardian, while also landing on numerous top ten lists, including in the Village Voice and the Los Angeles Times.
Drawing on Sparks' plans for a feature film version of their musical, The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman will be presented for the first time in a live setting as what might best be described as a "film-to-be.” Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin will be onstage, giving stage and cinematic directions throughout the performance, as the cast—including famed Finnish actor Peter Franzen as Ingmar Bergman, Ann Magnuson as Greta Garbo, and Sparks’ Ron and Russell Mael—performs the musical in its entirety. Meanwhile, projections created by production designer Galen Johnson will foreshadow the mood and atmosphere of Maddin’s finished film during this special live presentation of Spark’s tale of art, temptation and the lure of big breasts and bigger budgets.
