The Mael men are such film fans (like myself) that l thought maybe it would be nice to have a film thread here....just to talk about anything cinematic....

I recently watched Spaceman which I'd been waiting a long time to see (obviously the song over the end credits was wonderful...well done Russell and 'Don't Go Away') but, having read the book l was a bit surprised at the totally different ending......another case of Hollywood happy over what was originally intended. I often wonder how hard it must be for an author to give up their rights as such but l suppose everything has its price......

Anyway....any thoughts on cinema? What you've seen?
Overrated?Underrated?

Or feel free to ignore this altogether. It's probably just my sad whim!

I've gone to the movies twice in the last several months for opening weekend. First was "Moana 2" and most recently "Paddington In Peru" which is the third movie in the Paddington series.

I thought "Moana 2" tried to cash in on everything that worked in the first movie. Low marks for originality.

"Paddington In Peru" had a certain charm. I thought the characters were believable and the ending was sweet.

Sometimes who you see a movie with is more important than the movie itself.

I haven’t been to the cinema since I let my Cineworld pass expire, the cost didn’t justify the amount of visits to the cinema.
I watch films on Netflix or Disney+ …but nothing worth mentioning.

I would go to the cinema more often if there was a proper BIG screen in my area but my local cinema is like a glorified TV room.......l do like to keep up though and every now and again a little gem appears... lm just about to watch Wim Wenders 'Perfect Days' again.....and then hopefully something in the future will beckon.....

I haven't been to a cinema for decades. In the late 80's Blockbuster store open up, and you could hire a video or dvd to watch at home. Now only watch films on TV.

I remember when my video shop opened, l took the same video out so many times the manager explained that l could chose a different one if l wanted......
There aren't too many films that l can watch over and over but there are some.
I watch mostly at home too but then l miss the communal experience of sitting in a theatre with other people (even if they are making noise and being irritating).

I saw The Films open up for Butch Walker around 2008. They were really good and Mrs. Buckeye even got an autographed CD after the show.

Fun video

I could have sworn there was a 'Becomers ' thread somewhere on the forum but l can't find it.....so......

I saw this film a few weeks ago, mostly to hear what Russell's narration was like and certainly not having high expectations for the film, but l absolutely loved it!!! It was silly,it was poignant,it was strangely moving and it was funny! Russell's narration was strange and detached and perfect for the film but l must admit although it was the reason l watched, it wasn't the reason l kept watching......

I'd watch this film again and in my book that's the biggest accolade.

I liked the Moroder soundtrack to Metropolis (1927) 1984
Sort of project Sparks could of donated a track to as it looks right up the bands alley .

The edited film with the track overlaid is a good watch if you like the 80s era sound .

The few independent cinemas within my driving distance are, as you say, on the small side. It was well worth it to see Everything Everywhere All at Once with an enthusiastic crowd before the Oscars got that film the recognition it deserved all along, and I hope to see Flow at one of our little indies this month, but I think it's been about two years since I've been to the BIG cinema with the big comfy chairs and the basic-but-tasty full meals and I'm not sure whether they'll show anything this year worth going to see on the big screen.

Our indies didn't show Annette, so I don't expect local showings of X-Crucior whenever that comes out.

I don't mind a smallish room if the screen is in proportion.....l went to see Dr. Strangelove last week in a university run independent cinema...lovely room, not too big, perfect screen not too big!
Unlike the last time l went to my local cinema....decent room, not too big but HUGE screen that almost distorted the viewing....(admittedly it was Despicable Me 4 so the sensory overload was practically guaranteed)..

The last two films I saw in the cinema were both concert films. Stop Making Sense (4K) and Queen Rock Montreal (IMAX). It was very immersive and mind-blowing! Although, I don't know about other countries, there is a downside of watching concerts in the cinema - you have to be quiet during the screening. It's a torture!

The last film I saw in the cinema that is not concert films, it was Living. It's a remake of Ikiru by Akira Kurosawa. It's set in 1950s London and Bill Nighy plays the lead role. For me, it's 10/10.

I like the sound of that Kurosawa remake..... I've seen quite a lot of his but not Ikiru..... I'm assuming the original is worth a watch as well!

Among Kurosawa films, I like Ikiru the most. It's so poignant and heartfelt at the same time. Have you ever watched Dodes'ka-den and Madadayo? These are also my favourite. They might not be as popular as Seven Samurai or Rashomon but I think they deserve more attention. Especially Madadayo. It's a gem.

I recommend you to watch Ikiru before Living. There is a lovely 'easter egg' in the remake...

I love Madadayo.....it's an absolutely beautiful film. It's become a bit of a phrase in my workplace....Are you ready to shuffle off yet? MADADAYO!!!!
But l do love Ran also.....it's simply stunning to watch.

Yasujiro Ozu is another director l really like. The Noriko trilogy is such a lovely collection of films....so quiet and understated but so emotional...Tokyo Story is sublime.

I'll definitely check out Ikiru......
